Darlene Brickman, 61, died Nov. 11 from injuries she received from a fire inside her apartment, according to Clarksville Fire Rescue Capt. Michael Rios.
Fire investigators said they believe the cause of the apartment fire stemmed from Brickman smoking in bed while using oxygen.
Clarksville Fire Rescue responded to the Parc Apartments at 441 Needmore Road for a fire alarm that sounded shortly before 3 p.m.
Once firefighters arrived, they pulled Brickman from the smoke-filled apartment and initiated CPR, but the life-saving measures were unsuccessful, Rios said in a release.
“A dialysis company arrived to pick up the occupant of the apartment and heard the fire alarm,” Rios said. “They opened the [door], and smoke poured out the apartment.”
The company worker then called 911.
“Although the sprinkler system extinguished the fire, the smoke conditions were not survivable,” Rios said.
Brickman succumbed to her injuries.
