The Montgomery County Commission approved a resolution to rename the Montgomery County Court Center the Douglas Weiland Court Center.

Former Montgomery County Mayor Ralph Douglas Weiland was present at the Feb. 8 commission meeting as Mayor Jim Durrett read the resolution, which was approved unanimously.

In accepting the recognition, Weiland thanked the commission and said the naming of the court center after him was quite an honor and one he never expected to receive.

“I’m proud of the commission and proud of the county,” Weiland said. “I’m proud to say I was able to serve the county all those years.”

Durrett said Weiland was first elected Montgomery County executive by the commission in 1997 to fill the unexpired term of his predecessor.

The former mayor was then twice elected in 1998 and 2002, where he honorably and loyally served the citizens of Montgomery County, Durrett said.

“Prior to being elected as county executive-mayor, Doug completed a 31-year career with the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System, as a business teacher, the coordinator of federal programs and the supervisor of vocational education,” Durrett said. “Then, he was the director of business affairs for 22 years.”

During his tenure as mayor, Durrett said Weiland demonstrated foresight, leadership, inspiration and guidance in the rebuilding efforts following the 1999 downtown tornado.

He was responsible for the enhancement of county government services as exhibited by the historic courthouse, court center, millennium plaza, the county’s jail expansion and the renovations of Montgomery County Veterans Plaza, to name a few, Durrett said

“Mayor Weiland led significant efforts to leave behind a legacy for the future by imagining what the next quarter of a century would bring to local citizens,” Durrett said. “[This] includes the impact that a considerable population boom would have on the delivery of service and the county’s financial obligations.”

With the reading of the resolution, Durrett and the commissioners formally recognized Weiland for his faithful service to Montgomery County and continued commitment to public service.

“For such a dedicated and distinguished individual as Mayor Doug Weiland, the naming of the Montgomery County Court Center in his honor is a well-deserved and appropriate recognition,” Durrett said.
