Several high-achieving students in the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System were honored last week at the Feb. 11 Board of Education meeting, receiving the district’s Point of Pride awards.
The awards were presented to achievers in robotics and several all-state music talent, honored by the Tennessee Music Education Association.
The robotic teams were also featured in the Feb. 6 edition of Main Street Clarksville.
All-state musical achievers included Rossview High School’s Jed Edmondson, who was named to the all-state band, and Hunter Keeran, who was named to the all-state symphony orchestra; Clarksville High School’s Kinsey Overdeer, who was named to the all-state symphony orchestra; and Northwest High School’s Logan Stewart, who was named to the all-state men’s choir.
In the robotics competition, 48 elementary and middle school teams competed with CMCSS students on teams that swept the top awards at the West Tennessee FLL Championship at the University of Memphis.
The tournament grand championship was awarded to students from Rossview and Richview middle schools. They also took second place in robot performance.
Naming themselves the Devolbergers – which is a name mash-up of the inventors, creators and programmers of the first industrial robot – the students began working as a team when they attended Moore Magnet School.
They are Richview Middle School students Ryan Bellamy, Katelyn Mann and Charlie Olita and Rossview Middle School students Nate Smith and Gavin Weddington. Their sponsor is Will Smith, who is a high school electives teacher at Alternative School. Also coaching is Greg Weddington and mentor-assistant coach Ashton Weddington, who is a junior at Middle College.
The Rossview Middle School’s Hawkbotics team, which took second place in the core values inspiration category, included Brooklyn Castleberry, Ayden Cline, Jia Do, Zachary Hewitt, James McNeil, Natalie Morgan, Selia Oliver, Elliott Stevens, Janey Stevens, Cassidy Wheeler and Luke Wilson. Their sponsor is David Kennedy.
The third-place trophy was awarded to Northeast Middle School’s SPARK team of Madison Potts, Nevaeh Schmeling, Jordan Bowser, Lauren Lee, Autumn Minix and Aidan Lancaster. Their sponsor is Meaghan Sikes.
The Moore Magnet Elementary School Moorebots won second-place grand champion in their division.
Students who competed included Ishan Chakrabarti, Isabella Clark, Brystolynn French, Connor Hatfield, Bryson Jones, Gavin O’Bryant, Polly Olita, River Story, Genevieve Ulysses and Trey Vallejos. The robotics coaches are Michelle O’Bryant and William Bowers.
