Govs stifled in second half, lose to Georgia

The Austin Peay Governors are not unfamiliar with playing against potential top NBA picks.

During the last two seasons, it was Murray State’s Ja Morant, who went No. 2 overall to the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2019 NBA Draft.

On Monday, Dec. 30, it was Georgia’s Anthony Edwards, a potential top pick in the 2020 Draft.

Although the Govs held Edwards in check, limiting the forward to just nine points on eight shots, they still fell to the Bulldogs 78-48 in Athens.

The lopsided final does not demonstrate how close the game actually was early on. APSU trailed by just five points at halftime on the back of a 7-0 run in the final two minutes of the half.

It all went downhill to begin the final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs held the Govs to just two points in the first 10 minutes out of the break, scoring 24 of their own to put a 26-point cushion between the squads.

Austin Peay’s putrid 14.7 percent second-half shooting brought their game total to a lowly 26.6 percent, including hitting three-pointers at just a 15 percent clip and free throws at 55 percent

Terry Taylor and Jordyn Adams were each effective, scoring 18 and 15 points, respectively, at a combined 43 percent clip. The rest of the team combined for 15 points, shooting 4-for-34 (11.7 percent).

Taylor grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and Governor guard Carlos Paez dished out six assists.

The loss wrapped up Austin Peay’s non-conference schedule. They finished the slate 6-7.
