It seemed like the Austin Peay State Governors were well on their way to extending their newly-formed OVC winning streak on Thursday with a 19-point second half lead over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles.
Then the lead shrunk. And it shrunk some more. The Governors couldn’t hit a shot and went on a five-minute scoreless drought. What was once a 19-point advantage became just five, and Tennessee Tech had the ball.
Then Terry Taylor happened, leading APSU back to a double-digit advantage and a 75-62 win, giving the Govs a 3-0 conference mark.
After the Golden Eagles shrunk the Govs’ lead to 58-53, the visitors went on a 17-9 run to close things out fueled by 11 points from Taylor, including three and-ones.
Fresh off his fifth OVC Player of the Week award of the season, Taylor scored 27 points with 12 rebounds and two steals, shooting 10-for-19 from the field.
Every Governor starter played at least 32 minutes and accounted for every point the team scored. Reigning conference Freshman of the Week Jordyn Adams added 20 points, six rebounds and three assists and Eli Abaev swiped five steals. Their ability to stay on the floor was pivotal, with only Abaev entering foul trouble with four fouls.
Taylor, Adams and Paez’s cumulative plus-minus with fellow starters Carlos Paez and Antwuan Butler came out to plus-73, while the four players off the bench combined for minus-8, albeit in limited minutes.
Though things did get close late in the second half, Austin Peay never trailed and led for the entire game aside from a 0-0 tie during the first 89 seconds of the game.
