The Clarksville Academy Cougars hosted the undefeated Jackson Christian Eagles on Friday night and were unable to find the scoreboard, losing 41-0.

Jackson Christian came out of the gates strong, scoring over half its points in the first quarter alone with three touchdowns. The Eagles managed only two field goals in the entire second half.

Despite the score, Cougars head coach John Crosby believes his defense had a solid night – albeit far from perfect – containing a team that hadn’t scored less than 40 in a single game all season, maxing out at 74 points in Week 2.

“They had a couple of runs that broke on us,” Crosby said. “I felt like our defense hung pretty solid for the most part, I felt like we did some good things defensively. They got a 50/50 ball on us at one point that we could’ve come down with. We definitely (have) to limit the big plays more than anything.”

The offense is where Clarksville Academy’s true struggles are. While the zero points speak for themselves, they turned the ball over multiple times and had trouble creating space against the Eagles large defensive front.

“They were just a better team than us,” Crosby said. “There’s no doubt about it. They were better up front. I thought we played pretty good defense at times, but we fumbled a couple of times and had too many costly penalties, but at the end of the day they were just the better team than us.”

One area of concern that will trouble Clarksville Academy all season is their depth with a 25-person roster. Though they didn’t play last week, the Cougars sustained multiple injuries to key players in their first game of the year, a one-score loss to Grace Christian-Franklin.

“We had some kids out still tonight that hopefully we’ll get back this season, but definitely had some starters out that started the first game,” Crosby said. “We’re hoping to get those guys healthy soon.”

Now 0-3 and 0-1 in its region, Clarksville Academy will look to get in the win column on Friday, Sept. 18 on the road against the Trinity Christian Academy Lions (1-2, 0-1).
