With a double-digit lead halfway through the third quarter with growing momentum, it seemed that the Clarksville Lady Wildcats were on their way to a District 10-AAA consolation game victory.

Alas, not everything is as it seems.

Instead, the Henry County Lady Patriots went on to score 47 second half points to defeat CHS 72-60, claiming third place in the district.

After making just one three-pointer in the first half, the Lady Wildcats wisely began to feed forward Mya Collins in the post. She scored eight points in the third quarter before the wheels fell off.

“I thought our shot selection got poor,” said coach Brian Rush. “We started settling for three-point shots which allowed them to take off and run which then contributed to the fact that our defense let us down at that point. I’m not sure with the half-court defense, their ability to take advantage of our miscues gave them some easy buckets. It swung momentum very quickly the other way.”

While Clarksville did make four triples in the second half, their scoring output suffered after a run to open the second half.

By the time they were able to amend the game plan, things were too far gone and Henry County’s momentum had escalated to the point of no return.

“They had gotten hot so now you’re dealing with (that), they’re starting to feel it,” Rush said. “Their top scorers, we kept them in check until that point. Once they got a couple easy buckets, then they could take the hard shots. They did a great job doing that.”

Collins led the Lady Wildcats with 17 points, 10 of which came in the final two quarters.

After losing in the district semifinal, CHS knew it would have to travel for the region game. With Monday’s loss it became official that they will travel to Lebanon High School to face the Devilettes on Friday at 7 p.m.

The two teams have not yet met this season.

“It’s an elimination game,” Rush said. “We want to make sure the effort we throw on the floor, we can be proud of. I thought our offense tonight was great, I thought our defensive effort at times was really good. I think we played probably two and a half great quarters. It’ll be important to play four quarters.”
