Things did not look good for the Clarksville Lady Wildcats when they went down 12-0 to the Northeast Lady Eagles early on Friday. It looked even worse when senior starter Maddie Berner – who had just returned to the lineup – left the game with a head injury.

All they did from there was outscore their foes by 18 points to claim a 48-42 win, keeping their unbeaten streak against Northeast going for a seventh consecutive season.

“I thought we showed a lot of character,” said Clarksville coach Brian Rush. “The girls just kept their composure and we just worked our way back in. Our ability to close the game at the end of the first quarter kind of helped settle us down.”

Even after ending the first quarter tied at 14, the Lady Eagles led 27-21 at halftime. It was in the second half where Clarksville truly took over, holding Northeast to just three points in the third quarter and scoring 17 of their own in the fourth.

Lady Wildcat forward Mya Collins stepped up in the post, scoring 16 points including 14 in the second half. In comparison, the Lady Eagles scored just 15 points total in the same time span.

“We felt going into the game that that’s where we had an advantage,” Rush said. “We’re really trying to take advantage of it. We thought Mya came out in the second half and really did a much better job posting up and giving us a better target that we could hit.”

Northeast was not without chances to keep themselves step for step with the Wildcats, but went 10-for-17 at the free throw line down the stretch.

“We didn’t make the wiser shots we needed to make,” said Lady Eagles coach Tracie Mason-Blair. “A possession or two we didn’t box out, get a rebound, put it back up. It’s just the bitty things that cost you the game, so we’ve just got to learn to get better and continue what we’ve been doing.”
