The Clarksville Northeast Lady Eagles set a dominant tone early on Monday, resulting in a quick 3-0 straight set victory over the Cheatham County Lady Cubs.

Northeast improved to 10-2 with the win.

Set one started fairly close, as both teams went shot for shot until Northeast went on a run, opening up a 16-7 lead, before slamming the door with a 25-12 win.

“I think our communication is getting a lot better,” said Lady Eagles coach Sam Loranty. “I mean, to start the season we were super slow with that communication. Now that they’re picking it up, they’re able to take these sets quicker and faster and play at our pace.”

The second set appeared to be different when the Cubs came out with four straight points, but Northeast ripped off 10 unanswered to pick up a 10-4 advantage. Instead of rolling over, Cheatham County cut it to 13-12, before the Eagles eventually closed it out at 25-18.

Set three appeared to look more like the first than the second when the Eagles blazed ahead for an early 19-8 lead, but the Cubs finished strong with a 13-6 run and lost 25-21 – their smallest margin of the afternoon.

“It shows that we have fight, and I love that about the team, but I would like that fight earlier in the set and not have to come back,” said Cheatham coach Aaron Nicholson. “It’s a lot harder when you get down early and have to continue to fight back. It takes a big toll on you. That’s where we’ve got to start out early so we’re not having to fight back.”

Conversely, the Eagles kept things from getting out of hand and finished strong as opposed to losing their lead.

“Our girls, they beat up themselves rather than (saying) ‘OK, I missed one, I’ve got to pass it back,’ so we have to remind them that it’s okay you missed one, go get the next one and make up for the mistake you just made,” Loranty said. “That they are strong, good, competitive athletes. They show that they know they have to work, and they have they have that drive we need.”
