The Northwest Lady Vikings earned a much-needed District 13-AAA volleyball win on Tuesday night, beating the Kenwood Lady Knights in straight sets.
Kenwood never gave NWHS much trouble, as the Lady Vikings won each set by scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-14.
The Lady Vikings are currently square in the middle of the district standings with West Creek right behind them, but are otherwise unable to go higher than the fourth seed but no lower than the fifth.
“I think they played as a team,” said NWHS head coach Amy Furnish. “We had a good conversation before the game about trying to gel as a team. That’s something that we’ve struggled a little bit with throughout the season.
“With the district tournament coming up, that’s something that we’ve really been trying to stress to them, that they want to be able to really compete and move forward within that tournament play. I think they’re finally getting that and that’s something that they’re going to have to come together and work on.”
Kenwood, on the other hand, is still searching for their first district victory along with Henry County. It was the second time this season that they were beaten 3-0 by Northwest.
“Kenwood is a team that isn’t super competitive with us this year, and it’s not a team that makes our team feel nervous, so I feel like it was a good night to (come together),” Furnish said.
KHS head coach Lynda Courtney declined to speak postgame. The frustration was evident with her team routinely making minor mental errors leading to easy points for their opponents. The team returned only two varsity starters from last year’s team, and they were hopeful that their potential would come to pass by this point in the season, but that was not the case on Tuesday.
Northwest’s season was shortened due to COVID-19 cancellations as they had games scheduled against Kentucky opponents who were disallowed from traveling outside of the state for competition.
“I feel like (the players) sort of feel like I do; wishing they could get some more play in going into the district tournament,” Furnish said. “We’re going to have some hard practices these next few days and try to get ready and be prepared.”
The Lady Vikings will wrap up their regular season on Thursday, Oct. 1 against Henry County while Kenwood will look to end the season with a win at Rossview.
